I very nearly bought this pretty saffron R a couple of months ago for $3,500. I decided it best to not meet one of my heroes, swallow my Swede love and buy something a bit more reliable...

The ad is still there, but it’s been updated with a blown head gasket and a price of $1,000. I’m glad I didn’t but it then, but I desperately want to go buy it now. I just can’t take on another project right now. :(

I know, but I truly don’t have the time, space or budget. I’ve got a Jeep that needs suspension TLC and a new driver’s seat, a Suburban that needs a rear main seal, wheel bearings and a steering gearbox seal, a Studebaker that needs a radiator and a new trans pan gasket, and a house that needs 2 new bathrooms. If that thing followed me home, my wife would have me living in it.

Also, why are you in the grays?!

I told someone they have borderline personality disorder. Apparently offense was taken. These are the consequences of telling the truth.

And I hear you on the car. I don't have a wife, but my son would look at me like I'd gone right around the bend and it's humbling being correctly judged by an 8 year old.

If that was laser blue or forest green, I don’t think I’d be able to resist. I’m surprised you’re not picking it up and trying to hide it from the wife!

You could.... Go take a look at it. What's the worst that could happen

Oh, boy... You can’t be hurting feelings, now. Are you perma-gray’d or just in temporary jail?

You’ve raised a very practical son. An orange station wagon would make a great first car for him...

But... S A F F R O N!!!! It’s a total late- ‘90s color and it’s awesome!

The worst is, I could buy it. I’ve bought cars and tried hiding them from the Mrs. in the past. Let’s just say it wasn’t a fantastic idea I’ve repented of my wicked ways.

I annoyed her automotively earlier today when I admitted that I don’t love the GLI. I should absolutely love it, but I don’t. It’s just so practical and efficient and NICE . I don’t do well with nice. I like old, thirsty, stupid, noisy flawed cars. :(

Wait wait wait... That's a V70R... With AWD right? Is it also a manual? The link isn't working for me (wondering if it's been taken down). Because that's fuck it money and I really want to say fuck it.

Sadly there was no manual P80 V70R for us in Americaland.

Are you sure that's the same one? It mentions nothing of a head gasket and the wheels are different. But even at 800 with body damage and 250k, that sounds more like a parts car than a potential driver.

It's a different one. But $800 for a running R in Saffron..... Wouldn't be a bad project

Maybe not, if it doesn’t need a head gasket. If it needed a head gasket on top of being in “poor condition” and needing body work then it’s a big no. But it runs rough , so it could need a head gasket.

Do you know what the dash switch to the far left is? It’s the only blank in my 850 and I'm not familiar with the symbol

It’s the antenna switch. My buddy Dan used one for his water/meth injection on his incredible S70 he built. This thing was ridiculous. He bought a sewing machine and taught himself how to use it in order to convert wagon rear seat skins to fit the sedan. Custom tune and a Flowmaster exhaust.

That is quite the mishmash of awesome parts. I think I want a build like that, pilfering the best parts from the late 90's/early 00's Volvos.

I’m jealous of the black R seats... Dark interiors seem a lot harder to come by, even in the lower trims

Dan, the guy who built that car, is a damn savant. He can do anything and loves Volvos. At one point he had a P80 V70 R wagon in every color offered. Black, silver, green, saffron and laser blue. He also has an 84 242 which he turned into a Group A tribute. Last I talked to him he was trying to decide if he was going to put the built Volvo motor back in or if he was going to LS swap it. He also painted it himself. He decided it was too expensive to have someone paint it for him so he built a paint booth, bought a sprayer and taught himself. He has done like for like motor swaps in like 6 hours on cars like yours using jack stan ds and an engine hoist. At one point he was buying wrecked cars and putting together complete cars and then selling them. As a hobby. In his garage at his house. Amazing guy.

That K24 turbo he installed in his S70 (and also in a few of his R's) was absurd. So much fun. Everything he does is super clean too.

I have not done a car related thing in weeks. I have been spending my time making furniture which has been super fun. I welded the legs for this and my father got a piece of oak from fallen tree where he works. Just so happens that George Washington used to live there and wrote about this particular oak tree in his diary. The slab is a little over 2" thick, was cut in half and then epoxied back together to keep it from curling and we put the bow ties is for looks. Came out pretty nice.

I have basically converted my garage to a metal working shop. If I need to fix a car in there it's going to be a pain in the ass.
